Getting a second opinion
At TMC Health Cancer Center, we encourage patients to explore all their options to ensure they choose the best treatment plan for their individual needs.
Your first choice for a second opinion
Who pays for a second opinion?
Most insurance plans cover second opinions, and some even require them. If you’re unsure, contact your insurance provider for details.
What to expect during a second opinion appointment?
Bring the following documents to your appointment:
- Medical records with your diagnosis and cancer stage
- Recent blood test results
- CT scans, MRIs or PET scans on discs
- Biopsy results
- Your recommended treatment plan
The oncologist will review your records and may agree with the original diagnosis and treatment plan or suggest alternatives based on new research, clinical experience or available treatment technologies.
Most patients find that a second opinion provides confidence and clarity in their treatment choices. If you decide to switch to the second doctor, it’s courteous to inform your previous physician’s office.
Why do I need a second opinion?
Peace of mind
Getting a second opinion helps confirm your diagnosis and ensures you’re choosing the best treatment plan for your specific condition. Just like making a major purchase, you want to compare options, ask questions and gather information before making a decision.
Different perspectives
While there are standard treatments for many cancers, each oncologist has unique experiences and areas of expertise. One doctor may recommend a slightly different approach that could be a better fit for your case.
Access to clinical trials
New treatments are constantly being developed, and some clinical trials are only available at certain treatment centers. A second opinion can increase your chances of accessing innovative therapies that may not be available elsewhere.
Finding the right doctor
Your oncologist should be knowledgeable, experienced and compassionate. If you feel rushed, confused, or unheard, a second opinion may help you find a doctor who better fits your needs.
Is it insulting to my doctor to get a second opinion?
Not at all. Experienced and confident doctors encourage second opinions because they want patients to feel comfortable with their treatment plan.
At TMC Health Cancer Center, we want you to receive care where you feel most comfortable. A second opinion can help you:
- Confirm your diagnosis
- Understand all treatment options
- Explore new advancements in cancer care
- Feel confident in your decision
We invite you to contact us to schedule a second opinion appointment. Our patient schedulers can help match you with the right physician, and in most cases, we can accommodate specific doctor requests.
